I have been getting a lot of comments like this one from Andreas:

“Cool comparsion Dave. But what happened to your gear-setup. Are you renting all those expensive cameras?”

I just want quickly explain where I get this gear from.

I have a relationship with B&H Photo, they usually call me up once a month or so and ask me what I would like to try next.

This past month I really wanted experience the Canon 5D so I asked, “Can I try out the 5D?” A few days later it is on my door step.

B&H doesn’t tell me what to say in my reviews, and I try to be as unbiased as I can.

To complete this how-to, you will need:

A budget
A general idea of what you want to do with your camera
And time to comparison shop

Step 1: Set your budget

Decide how much you want to spend.

Your goal is to find the best camera in your price range.

Step 2: Think about your needs

Think about what you want to do with your digital camera. Do you want to be able to take pictures at night? Make large prints? Carry it with you everywhere?

Step 3: Shop

Visit a camera store—online or brick and mortar—to narrow down your choices. Find the largest selection possible.

Step 4: Decide what kind

Decide if you want a “point-and-shoot” camera or a “digital SLR” (single-lens reflex) camera. digital slr cameras are larger and more expensive but usually have more features and interchangeable lenses.

A digital SLR camera is a great professional camera but probably unnecessarily expensive for the amateur photographer.

Step 5: Decide what resolution

Figure out what resolution you want, known as the “megapixel” rating. Basically, the more megapixels a camera has, the larger the picture you can print and the higher quality the image will be.

A five-megapixel camera has sufficient resolution to print out a high-quality 11″ by 14″ picture.

Step 6: Focus on batteries

Look for digital cameras that use rechargeable batteries, and find out if you need a separate charger.

Step 7: Consider optical zoom

Decide on how much optical zoom you need. The higher the zoom, the steadier your hand must be. Most people would rather have a higher zoom than a higher resolution.

Don’t worry about digital zoom. All it does is magnify a photo, meaning the higher you zoom, the lower the picture quality. Optical zoom is what’s important.

Step 8: Consider the features

Consider what built-in features—like low-light focusing or red-eye reduction—are worth the expense for your needs.

A fast-acting camera is key to avoiding so-called “shutter lag,” which is the delay between your pushing the button and the camera taking the picture.

Step 9: Consider video

Decide whether you want video capability, but realize your filming length will be limited and will fill your memory card quickly.

If you want to digitally record video, you’re better off investing in a digital camcorder.

Step 10: Consider comfort

Don’t forget that comfort counts. If you’re planning to carry the camera around a lot, a smaller, lighter camera will be best.

Step 11: Buy memory

Most cameras don’t include enough memory, so purchase a memory card or stick. Most cameras come with a 16 MB “standard” card, but you’ll most likely want to buy another larger card so you’ll be able to store lots more pictures on it.

Step 12: Consider LCD screen size

All digital cameras have LCD screens. They vary in size; larger screens make the camera easier to use but will probably drain the batteries faster.

Step 13: Buy a case

Whatever you end up choosing, be sure to buy a case for it. Digital cameras can be easily damaged, and you don’t want your investment going to waste.

In 2004, Kodak stopped making new film cameras.

I get this question about once a week, “What are the Best Video Setting For The Canon DSLR cameras”.

So let me start off by eliminating two things you can take off the list. Those are aperture and ISO. Aperture, I really can’t tell you what to set it on because it depends on the type of look you are going after.With a shallow depth of field or not.

And the other one is ISO. ISO is kind of there for exposure how how you are going to set the exposure. I will say you do not want go too far north of let’s say 1600 especially on like the Canon T2i then it gets really noisy. Obviously you are going to need to use aperture along with the ISO to get the right exposure but at least it gets you in the ball park. Those two ingredients are taken off the list.

So the first I can tell you about what is on the list is shutter speed. Basically if you are going for a “filmic” look you are pretty much going to double your frame rate, so if you are shooting 24 frames per second you are going to want a 1/50th of a second shutter speed and if you are shooting at 60 frames per second you are going to go with 125th frames per second shutter speed. Now I will tell you it’s just kind of a guideline and a rule but I have shot at much higher shutter speeds and it has worked wonderful, especially if you are shooting something like myself which is just basically a moving head.

If you just getting your feet wet with your camera I think the best setting for Picture styles is Standard. I use it 90% of the time. If you are outside filming some landscapes for instance then you might want to try Landscape, and if you are using a close in portrait shot you might want to try Portrait picture style. After you have had the camera for a while and you want to take it to the next level, you might want to create a very flat picture style so you can have more control over color, sharpness and saturation in post.

As for White Balance, the best setting by far is always going to be custom. This is where you get the perfect color temperature for your shot. This is best way to do it, but it is also unfortunately the most time consuming.

The best setting for focus is to set it on quick focus and focus to one of the many points within the view finder. This is just my personal favor way to do this, I am sure others might disagree me but I got really accurate and fast results using this method.

Disable your AGC to get this cleanest audio, AGC is automatic gain control. I use a hack method for this, but there are many other ways to do this as well like a buying a Juicelink box or a software hack if you are brave enough to install it on your camera.

Set Movie Exposure to Manual, this is the best way to go by not letting the camera to decide for you.

Grid display to Grid 1, this helps me with my composition just right.

Disable Highlight Tone Priority, I have done many tests with this and found it best just to leave it off.

Auto Lighting Optimizer is set to standard. Again I have done a lot of tests with this and I find that this setting not only helps my portrait photos but it even helps when I do video interviews if the lighting is not quite even on the person’s face.
