Time Lapse Tutorial with a Nikon Digital SLR (Part 4)

PART 4 OF 4: This sparkling new video replaced the old and lousy time lapse video that we deleted from this channel. This video demonstrates you how to do time lapse with your Nikon digital slr. Enjoy!

Music: Glittering Blackness by Explosions in the Sky and Autumn Leaves by John Coltrane

Which lens did I use for those four time lapses?

For time lapse #1, I used the 400mm ƒ/2.8G AF-S ED-IF VR mounted on D300 at F/4.0, VR set to off and focusing set for Infinity (∞).

For time lapse #2, I used the Nikkor 85mm ƒ/0.74 AIS Noctilux mounted on D700 at F/1.0, using the hyperfocal focus [focused on the mountains using a laser rangefinder to calculate the focusing distance then go halfway to Infinity (∞)]. Four Quantum Qflashes; two pointed on the snow-filled surface at 1/64 power and two with snoot attachments pointing at the mountains at full power. The Milky Way is what brightened the photograph before the sunrise.

For time lapse #3, I used the Nikkor 45mm ƒ/2.8D ED PC-E Micro-Nikkor N, mounted on D3 at F/4.0 with slight upwards shift, using the hyperfocal focus [focused on the arch using a laser rangefinder to calculate the focusing distance then go halfway to Infinity (∞)]. Five Quantum Qflashes; two behind the arch to add backlight with 45 degrees head tilt at 1/32 power, two on both sides of the camera with a 45 degree head panned away from the arch at 1/64 power, and one on another rock directly behind the camera on higher level, pointing down at the arch at 1/128 power. The sunrise is what caused the saturation to increase.

For time lapse #4, I used the Nikkor 600mm ƒ/4.0G AF-S ED-IF N VR with VR turned off, mounted on a TC-1.7EII, again, mounted on D2Xs in High Speed Crop (HSC) mode at F/8, manual focused on the moon then tweaked the focusing slightly behind the moon to get Venus in focus.

No, it isn’t. Incandescent (tungsten) white balance was used to add the blue effect to the astronomic time lapse. Chromatic aberration will result in two colors; hot pink and baby blue (not just one color) around the corners; not all over the picture.

No, it is not a Repro lens; the 85mm Repro have a maximum aperture of F/1.0 and it is strictly for scientific purposes. This 85mm were one of two long lost Noctilux lenses using Leica lens construction (Leica optics). You can only find the 58mm ƒ/1.2 AIS Noctilux around on Ebay. Good luck.

Thank you for the great tutorial.

I’m curious about your 85mm lens. Is it the same as the Nikkor Repro?

1200mm lens does not exist. If they do, you get 1200mm on FX / Film or 1800mm on DX digital SLR’s.

I’m sorry, we don’t use Adobe Photoshop Elements, you would need to ask someone who is a master with that software, but I highly doubt Photoshop Elements have the features that is shown in this tutorial except, at least, RAW development.

Yes, correct. If turned on, VR will move the image around within the image circle, which messes up the time lapse.

It becomes a .MOV movie format, which will need Apple QuickTime Player to play the time lapse videos after you export the animation into a video. All Mac’s already have it pre-installed but PC’s might need to download QuickTime Player from Apple website (they’re free of charge).
