I WOuld say right now the best Deal on the market would Be nikons L3. Very slim camera that is inexpensive and does not use Proprietary batteries. You can find this camera for about $179 at Bestbuy……and if your looking too get the camera with the accessories……look too spend about $30-$50 on memory and $50 for nikons kit that includes a battery charger, batteries and a case

Some models to look at would be the following

Canon Rebel XTi and XSi

Nikon D40 or D60

These cameras are between $500-$1,000 with a lens. I would any extra money you have and invest it in another quality lens. The lens will make a much bigger difference in the quality of your pictures than the camera body will. These cameras are also very user friendly for the beginning photographer.

If you really want the more expensive camera look at the Canon 40D or the Nikon D80 or D200. With the exception of build quality and a few advanced features there is not much difference from the entry level models though.
