it s not laser. its infra-red light that sensors the distance of the target to tune the lens right. harmless light for eyes. otherwise it would have a large sticker above it "danger" or somethin.

It's a preflash light meant to reduce the chance of red eye. It can be turned off if it is bothersome- which it probably is to your subjects.
