Disassembly and repair of the shutter button problem that plagues many canon cameras from the 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D and 50D family.
This repair usually costs $300 dollars in labour and shipping. This is a quick overview of how it’s done.

Hey thanks man! I just needed to get to the usb input that I pushed through the casing when I stepped on a wire and pulled it. I never would have known that the screws were covered by a peel off cover HA!
All the best in 2010

hey. thanks for this video it’s very helpful. have you tried fixing a shutter curtain because that’s what i wanna find out if canon can still be trusted on this. i brought my camera to service for the 2nd time for an error 99 repair. i doubt it if they really do replacement on parts if they say parts need replacements when in fact they only clean them. right? pls let me know if have any advice. video is better.haha
Mate, this combined …
Mate, this combined with the 20D_Shutter_Release.pdf guide found on google helped me fix my 40d shutter, although I must add that though similar, the cameras are constructed rather differently making for some really tight unchartered work. saved me $300
So this is for the …
So this is for the shutter button…I just confirmed via a camera repair shop that my 30D has a bad shutter i.e. I need to replace the shutter. Any thoughts on that? I think this video will help me get it dissambled but I don’t need to clean my shutter button.
My symptom is Err 99 and the shutter stays stuck in the down position.
Thanks,
Roy
I’ve got the same …
I’ve got the same problem with my 50D at the moment. Canon Japan are claiming that they’ve never had any reports of the problem.
This video is okay but it’s been sped up so much that I wouldn’t be confident enough to perform the servicing myself – it doesn’t even mention what solution is being used. Also a bit more commentary during the contact cleaning part would have been helpful.
this was on one of …
this was on one of your flickr pics, helped me cause the video was too fast…

Noooo. I checked …
If this help You, first time screen wokes, but after (I dont remember what i’ve done) it doesn’t workd. You are talking albout screws (and closing body), I think it doesn’t matter for LCD. I’m sad, I don’t want give it to Canon service.
Noooo. I checked again all connectors, under yellow tape too and still nothing
If you are going to …
If you are going to do this, make sure you keep track of your screws. Draw each side of the camera on a piece of paper and put the screws down where they came from. I also had two screws that got the heads stripped. I had to use a Dremel with a tiny engraving bit to grind off the heads.
I doubt you broke …
I doubt you broke anything. The square connector on the lower ribbon connector is easy to get partway in – but you have to press on both sides to make sure it’s all the way in. And there was a yellow piece of tape on mine that was getting in the way that I had to move.
Thanks, but I …
Thanks, but I checked connectors few times. Is possible that i broke one (electronic tape)? Sorry 4 my english. Any ideas? I clean all cables, nothing.
I followed this …
I followed this video to repair my 40D. The 40D connectors are a bit different. There is a fiber optic cable that leads from the main board on the chassis of the camera to the top panel. It plugs into a hole in the white chip on the main board. There is also a ribbon cable with a two row header that plugs into the bottom of the main board rather than a flat connector. I had to take the back off several times to make sure all the connectors were properly seated when the eTTL and LCD didn’t work.
I had the same …
I had the same problem. You need to double check all the connectors to make sure they are clean and seated properly.

i’ll be cleaning my shutter button on my 40D soon as i was having the same problems you were having.. it doesnt look too hard.. just a few things you have to keep track of and be careful with.. i’ll be sure to take lots of pics..
btw, when you pealed the rubber gripping off of the front and back of the camera, does it just stick back on when you put it back or do you have to put additional glue or adhesive?
